Studies on Oxidation and Reduction by Pneumococcus. v. the Destruction of Oxyhemoglobin by Sterile Extracts
نویسنده
چکیده
In the fust of this series of papers suspensions of living pneumococci, which during growth had been protected from the action of air by anaerobic cultivation, were shown to possess the property of uniting with molecular oxygen to form peroxide when exposed to air under conditions unfavorable for cell multiplication (1). The three succeeding papers have dealt with the formation of peroxide (2), the reduction of methylene blue (3), and the oxidation of hemotoxin (4) by sterile extracts of pneumococci under conditions excluding the participation of living or intact cells in these oxidative reactions.

STUDIES ON OXIDATION AND REDUCTION BY PNEUMOCOCCUS. VI. TaE OXIDATION OF ENZYMES IN STERILE EXTRACTS OF PNEUMOCOCCUS. BY JAMES
Avery and Cullen (I, 2)have demonstrated that the pneumococcus cell contains the hydrolyzing enzymes (peptonase, lipase, sucrase, amylase, inulase) and a bacteriolytic enzyme. Cole (3) (1912), (4) (1914), has shown that pneumococci also possess a hemotoxin. These enzymes and the hemotoxin are endocellular, representing actual constituents of the cell, and consequently are demonstrable in steril...

In the preceding paper (1) it was shown that pneumococci are able to form peroxide within pH zones and temperature lim its, and under other conditions, that do not permit active cell growth and multiplication. The present paper is concerned with the production of peroxide by sterile extracts prepared by freezing and thawing &e pneumococcus cell; most of these preparations were titered through B...
متن کاملStudies on Oxidation and Reduction by Pneumococcus. Iii. Reduction of Methylene Blue by Sterile Extracts of Pneumococcus
The two preceding papers of this series have dealt with the phenomenon of peroxide formation by pneumococcus. The first of these studies (1) concerned itself with the conditions under which this compound is formed when air is admitted to cultures of pneumococci which have been grown anaerobically. Under these conditions peroxide is formed at reactions and at temperatures inhibiting active cell ...

1. The systems responsible for oxidation and reduction in the pneumococcus cell have been shown to consist of two components, the nature of which has been discussed. 2. The oxidizing and reducing power of active extracts of pneumococci is inactivated by exposure to air. This loss in activity is due to an inactivation of the thermolabile cellular component consequent on secondary reactions analo...

Background and Objective: The increasing demand for the discovery of next-generation antimicrobials necessitates the use of plant extracts as alternatives. This study investigates the antibacterial efficacy of extracted cinnamon essential oil (CEO) and commercial cinnamaldehyde (CN) against foodborne pathogens. Methods: Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method was used to screen the antimicrobial pot...
